My students are involved in EAST (Environmental and Spatial Technology). The EAST model uses technology as a catalyst for collaborative and self-directed learning. EAST is an elective that students can take to be able to change community issues they may see as problems. We try to make sure that all the technology they may need is at their disposal. Students learn many career skills to help them in the future. These include communication, decision-making, and self-driven skills.
Students independently chose the appropriate technology to obtain, analyze, synthesize, and assimilate information.
Instead of being lectured to by a teacher, students take responsibility for their learning, making learning different here.
My Project
My students are working on ways to help our community. The community that stands out to them the most is the community of the school. Some of my students have already created a clothing closet and a food pantry, and other students are wanting to help by creating hygiene bags for those who may need them. These bags will be housed in the same area of our school as the clothes and food. Students will be able to anonymously get these items if needed by asking a teacher, the nurse, or the counselor.
EAST students are wanting to be certain that all student needs on our campus are met.
By making sure basic needs are covered, they feel that the learning will improve.
