Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 2nd grade at a Title One elementary school in a high poverty/high crime neighborhood. 30% are African American; 70% are Latino. A majority are second language learners.
For several years my students have been writing, publishing, and uploading a virtual library of student-generated books. We have won several awards. Now we want to publish hard copies of our books for our classroom library and for competition.
We have most of the equipment we need to publish books: computers, printer, and book binding machine. Everything was purchased with funds earned in competition. We are requesting a cutting board and craft scissors to give our books more textured edges and a more unique appearance to build on our success.
My students helped create a modern 21st Century learning environment through their creativity and hard work. Writing and publishing have been the main conduits for generating funds. None of the equipment in our hi-tech classroom was purchased with public money, but earned and hard won in competition. We compete to win and, in doing so, teach the children many valuable lessons, in addition to the core concepts of language, mechanics, and writing. Namely: 1. that we are bigger than our circumstances, 2. that we can create "wealth" with talent, 3. that we can win despite our disadvantages, and 4. that we must constantly strive to innovate and improve our products. Our books are our products. We are requesting 2 items that will give our books a winning design.
