Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the first movie you went to? The first movie that sparked your interest in another world or a character? Many of our 7th and 8th graders have never been to a movie theater. The majority of our students come from low income families and school is their only opportunity to experience the arts.
With a film program, our inner city students can tell their stories through documentaries.
In our school, 88% of our students are Latino or African-American, and their voices deserve to be heard.
Last year, I arranged to have professional filmmakers visit our school. The students were fascinated to learn about the process of creating 3D films (as you see in the picture above.) Our 8th graders dream of attending the prestigious Arts High School in Newark, which has a film/tv department. Arts High has launched the careers of many successful artists and has one of the highest graduation rate in the district. My students could be part of the #Oscar So Diverse movement. They can be the future producers, writers, and directors who change the culture of entertainment, media and the arts.
My Project
My students need a laptop with a hard drive for editing the films that that will tell the stories of their diverse cultures. We have a small grant which will cover one camera, one tripod, and a set of batteries.
Our school does not have any computers or laptops available for screenwriting and editing.
We do not have a media department and the only computers in the school are Chromebooks, which are needed in the classrooms. A film program will allow a diverse community to express voices. Media also provides an opportunity for students with special needs to fully participate in a general education classroom.
