Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love to come to school and they love to learn. However, teaching in urban district which is a low-income area where over ninety-five percent of our students receive free lunch can be a struggle. Students come from single parent homes where they struggle to make ends meet. Each day our students come to school after getting themselves dressed, fed (some) and to the bus on time with little adult support. They still manage to walk through our doors with a SMILE and ready to learn.

"One moment can change a day, one day can change a life and one life can change the world" is a favorite quote of mine from Buddah.

The barriers our students need to hurdle are vast.

When our kids walk through the door you never know what challenges they have already faced that morning. A gentle hello, hug, smile and listening ear is almost ALWAYS needed. Sometimes we are the most consistent and loving relationship they have. I want to help our student population feel loved and cared for while helping them reach their fullest potential.

My Project

Many of my students come from single parent homes where basic necessities are scarce. With the new school year and Fall weather approaching each year I want my students to be prepared and less worried about the cold, rainy weather. I often supply clothing and necessities for the changing weather and the students that are exposed to the elements on their daily walk to and from school. This year I would like to be prepared in advance with book-bags, t-shirts, sweatshirts, tights, rain ponchos and umbrellas. No child should have to be wet and cold before even starting their day. Many of these children wait at bus stops or walk very early. I would also like to have easy take home foods readily available. Many students don't get meals beyond the school walls. They often take home extra fruit and snacks from the day. I have brought cereal and nonperishable food to their houses or sent it home in book bags. I know all these things would help the all around student. No child should have to go without or worry about the basics and then be expected to perform in the classroom. Please help me make this possible!
