Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 6th graders at an urban, Title I public International Baccalaureate middle school, which means that all students receive free breakfast and lunch through the federally funded Free or Reduced Lunch Program and focus on an International Mindedness philosophy.
Our student body is very diverse and a reflection of the multicultural community we inhabit (65% of our students are Hispanic and the other 35% are classified as African-American, Pacific Islander, Filipino, Asian, Indochinese, Native American White and Mixed race students).
My students run the gamut in terms of diversity - I teach students with special needs, gifted and talented students, English Language Learners, and everything in between.
My Project
A colored printer and scanner will allow my students to properly showcase their work both electronically and in print. With the Common Core standards, students are now expected to properly use technology in order to better prepare them for college and the workforce. My students are fortunate enough to have daily access to computers in my classroom. Therefore in order to increase their computer literacy skills, my students spend a lot of time not only typing narratives, analysis, and reflections but learn to create digital products such as posters, maps, organizers, comics, and news articles. These projects help my students incorporate technology to further enhance their understanding of geography, civics, history, and literature. Not only do I want my students to be able to use universal online resources such as Google Apps, I want them to be able to see and showcase their work in both a digital and hard copy format.
The donations for this project will help my students become more invested in their learning by being able to see and showcase their work in the colored versions they are created in.
Currently, my students spend weeks creating beautiful products with writing and visuals yet can only print them in black in white. I want my students to be proud of the work they create, therefore they deserve to showcase their work exactly how it was created, in color. The ability to utilize a colored printer would allow my student to fully utilize all aspects of technology in the classroom. Furthermore, with a colored printer/scanner, students can also import their own drawing/art into digital assignments, integrating multiple forms of learning. Please help my students utilize technology on a deeper level and be more proud of work they create and want to show to their classmates, school, and communities
