I teach reading intervention to students who have literacy skills well below grade level. I teach students from 6th to 8th grade who come from a variety of backgrounds. Many of my students are also considered at-risk for a variety of reasons.
My students are not avid readers, yet.
They often have trouble remembering a book that they loved and they do not have a "to read" list. They need to be introducing to new, relevant, engaging texts. My students work hard, not for a grade, but to increase their abilities.
My Project
I want to put books into the hands of my reading intervention students that THEY chose. I want them to see that reading is more than an assignment in school. I want to create life-long readers that see reading as an enjoyable event.
Stephanie Harvey has written that Access + Choice + Time = Volume.
Funding this project will give my students access to books of their choice and I will give them the time to read them.
Researcher Stephen Krashan has found "increasing access to books can not only help students enormously – it can even mitigate the effects of poverty on school achievement and literacy development." Putting these books into the hands of my students is more than just a kind gesture. It could help them academically for the rest of their lives. Not only that, but the books will live on in my classroom library and affect students for years to come.
