I have the pleasure of teaching a group of active, fun-loving first graders from a military community. Having one or more parents serving in the military, these children display an incredible amount of resilience and adaptability.
I am always amazed by the positivity they bring each day, especially when their families are going through long deployments.
In my classroom, we work daily on fostering positive relationships, building independence, and taking ownership of learning. These skills are essential for career and college readiness! Our everyday routine includes morning meetings that focus on social skills, intentional literacy and math centers to supplement students’ learning, and tracking our progress along the way. When my students are given these opportunities, they have shown incredible growth in their independence as well as their education!
My Project
My students are learning how to become independent learners and work in ways that will best fit their needs. Having choices in center activities and the freedom to work around the classroom has significantly increased their engagement and ownership of learning. Currently, I have 5 stability balls that are rotated each day to allow fair access to something other than a classroom chair. With more flexible seating options, I can eliminate the rotations and provide different seating on a daily basis! My students will learn how to find the best work and study spot for their individual needs. Whether they are wiggling in a wobble stool, sitting on a wobble cushion, or cozying up on the couch, I want my students to find a place where they can be their most productive selves!
