Remember when a teacher asked you to demonstrate your knowledge by completing tests and worksheets? Maybe you understood the subject matter but failed the tests because you just weren't a good test taker? We need to give students different ways for them to demonstrate their learned skills!
We work in a second and third grade blended classroom.
Our school started implementing the use of devices in classrooms, putting technology right in students' hands, giving them ownership to their own learning. Though our PTA has generously donated iPads and iPods, we are still in the situation where the devices need to be shared across grades K-6. There are weeks where my class does not even have a chance to use those devices. The students are full of great ideas and they are enthusiastic about learning.
My Project
We work in a second and third grade blended classroom. Needless to say there are various learning styles, all at different levels and creativity. There are unlimited applications specific to iPads that students can use to demonstrate their understanding of subject materials. They can draw and record, create a movie, label photos taken on iPads, etc. The students can then "teach" the class by the use of Apple TV through Bluetooth compatible with iPads. Technology in their hands creates accountability. Being able to exercise their creativity in their own way is a great motivator for them. Working on a research project, finding out necessary information will be done with ease. Instead of working on their project for months, since our computer class is only once a week, students can get their project completed in the shortest amount of time possible, thus allowing them more time to learn more materials. Furthermore, iPad allows instant access to books that are not easily accessible!
Your generous donation of iPads will be an amazing asset to students' learning.
It can be used across the curriculum. Having the devices that are easily accessible will impact students at ALL learning levels, ALL learning styles, and ALL levels of creativity and imagination. It is extremely important to provide students with various venue to demonstrate their learning. Equal opportunity for all students!
