My students need flexible seating in their kindergarten classroom, in order to promote engagement with the students ability for choice and movement.

My Students

My students are among the smartest, brightest, most loving and most inquisitive students out there! I have the privilege of teaching kindergarten! Each child enters my room with a different story and background, and my job is to bring them in as my own and create a loving and safe environment for them to learn and grow. My classroom is full of 23 enthusiastic, engaged kindergartners. They come to school eager to learn new things every day. We are constantly pushing forward to meet curriculum guidelines and benchmarks. I am learning a lot about my students every day. Providing a comfortable and safe learning environment is an important aspect of my day.

Many of the students are from middle class homes.

Our school is located in a small community that takes pride in their school, community and citizens. As a teacher new to the community, I have come to love and appreciate the dedication of the community and school district to the academic performance of all students.

My Project

Flexible seating allows for choice. Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed. The clipboards and lap trays allow students to sit on the floor and still have a hard surface to write on.

Flexible seating allows children to move.

Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused. The Bilibo seats and beanbags that I have requested allow for students to wobble, rock and bounce while they work.

Flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive. Students who are comfortable are more likely to be engaged.

And most importantly, flexible seating helps make learning fun. When students are able to juxtapose learning with fun and excitement, they are more likely to develop a love for lifelong learning.
