Many of our students arrive from different countries and coming to our school is a new experience in an educational setting. My school serves students from over 20 different countries and many students are English as second language learners. My school is a Title 1 school and 98% of my students come from low economic backgrounds. We receive funding from the federal government to help purchase the basic essentials that our students need. Sometimes coming to school means students have free access to books for the very first time. Recently, several students showed interest in starting a book club for 7th and 8th grade. We now have nearly 40 students coming to monthly meetings! The passion students show for reading and discussing YA literature is exciting for me to see.
My Project
Book club allows students the opportunity for discussions that lead to student inquiry and critical thinking in a safe environment that they may not have outside of school. The books have been chosen by students for our school's student led book club. A vast book selection provides students in-depth book discussions as well discussions about life choices.
Students have the opportunity to have a relaxed atmosphere outside of the traditional classroom setting to share thoughts and gain new perspectives on different topics through literature and various genres.
Students are using social skills such as respect, confidentially and empathy as often times discussions lead to different opinions and view points from club members.
