This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My first grade class, in a city Title 1 school (on a small budget), functions with the bare minimum every day. Technology is a luxury we can't afford. It would be helpful for my students to be able complete their reading/math assessments on a tablet that will post directly to our data websites.

Our school is located in a high poverty area.

My students can barely afford pencils. They are not exposed to much at home, so I try to create interesting lessons based on their needs. They are so eager to learn! All instruction is data driven. Since they are struggling students, daily assessments are needed to ensure all needs are being met. They are so proud when they see that their hard work is really paying off. Assessment data shows their growth in both reading and math.

My Project

A tablet will enable my students to go on our reading and math data websites and conduct their assessments and see immediate results. The websites will show daily and monthly growth for each student. Since our classroom desktops barely work, my students take their assessments on paper and I enter results and scores at home using my desktop. Unless I constantly print our results for 30 students, they don't see the graph and point tally showing improvement. Entering their data online will show them where they started and how far they have come. I know that this instant gratification will not only give them a feeling of self worth, but will also provide the incentive to work harder.

I know that having a tablet for assessment purposes will make it easier for my students to enter their reading data and see improvement in their learning practices.

Instruction can be geared to each individual student's needs.
