Picture a group of children growing up in a rural impoverished community. Many are low income, along with a slew of other problems and needs. These are children who experience trauma in their community and homes on a daily basis - and who therefore really shine in our classroom. My kindergartners are hilarious, if not a little rough around the edges. We spend a lot of our day meeting the very basic need of feeling "safe" at school. Eating breakfast, lunch, and snack at school is just a normal part of our day.
My Project
This coming fall we are presented with a very limited budget for arts and craft supplies. These are a staple of kindergarten learning!
We are in need of glue, glue sticks, and markers so the future kindergartners can have the opportunity to use them to create fun and educational projects for their first school year experience!
In our classrooms, we create almost EVERY day, something to connect to their reading, writing, and mathematical thinking. For example, All About Me will be our first project in the fall, students will need glue sticks to create their projects, and markers to design them. There simply isn't a day that goes by that these materials won't make a tremendous impact on the learning of all my students.
