Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a very diverse group of autistic students in grades one-three. All of them of unique individuals. Some are very talkative and social and they benefit from time spent with their peers in the general education classrooms. Some of my students are very quiet and limit their interactions to me and a few favorite objects in the classroom. I also have a few who struggle with communication and often exhibit behavior issues in their attempts to correctly communicate their wants and needs.
What they all seem to have in common this year Is the attraction to Scratch and Sniff Stickers.
My students respond positively to them and will work hard to complete assignments and stay on tasks to earn these.
My Project
My students are the best. Some days are better than others but that is just part of their personalities.
One thing they all respond positively to is stinky stickers!
The sensory aspect of them is just the ticket to keep them motivated to stay on task and complete their work. I am not trying to say this works every time, but when I had some they were a great motivator in all areas of classroom behavior both academic and social.
I am very hesitant to use edible reinforcement due to allergies but having a broad range of scents in stickers seems to be the winning combination for my students.
