My class serves teenagers from various walks of life with personal issues preventing them from succeeding in a regular classroom. They are prepared to drop out of high school but come to me in a last ditch effort to graduate with a GED and some knowledge to pursue an occupational track and/or college.
I used to think that a teenager choosing a GED was taking the easy way out and that those students were just lazy.
Boy, was I wrong! Teaching these teenagers has opened my eyes to the struggles so many of them face daily and their need for a dedicated class and teacher to help them through. From the boy who came to me incapable of writing in anything other than text shorthand to the boy whose mother was arrested for drugs as he was leaving to take his test, to the girl who had been raising herself and caring for her 76-year-old dying father, to the child with leukemia who needed social interaction in a safe place, I learned in a hurry that GED has a definite place in our society.
Any time we help a student achieve goals and become productive, it's a win!
My Project
Photos of students succeeding is an awesome motivator. Many students develop a sense of pride and confidence when they "make the Wall of Fame." We need bulletin boards to hang these for all to see.
With a projector, we could have show and tell--for modern day teenagers!
Students always find great correlations to my lessons online but have no way to share with the class other than passing their phone. Projecting their discoveries would foster great conversation and learning.
We are housed in a well-used building that smells different from day to day. Many students have severe allergies and would benefit from the air purifier. Hopefully, this will improve attendance.
