In music class at Pond Gap, it is our mission to foster a lifelong love of music. We strive to develop a greater understanding and passion for music through singing, creating, discovering and use of instruments.
I teach at a community, Title One school with over four hundred students.
Eighty-nine percent of my students come from low-income families and our music room lacks instrumental resources.
Our neighborhood school houses pre-k through fifth graders of all abilities and backgrounds. Many have trouble finding success in a classroom setting and have behavioral plans set in place. For these students, music can help them reach what they once thought they weren't capable of, but they need the right tools. These students require more resources to continue to be successful and grow musically. They deserve the opportunity to experience and discover music-making in ways they wouldn't be able to, outside of the school setting.
Surrounding schools are fortunate enough to have the funds and assistance to provide their music classroom with sets of instruments to engage all types of learners and fuel their love of music. With a little help, Pond Gap can obtain these musical resources as well!
My Project
My students have been hard at work creating music with a very limited amount of instruments we have. With the lack of a strong budget, it is tough to supply a music classroom with instruments to set up students for success!
These students deserve to be engaged in a way that makes music fun and gives them the motivation to be challenged.
Our music program would be stronger with the use of more hands-on learning by adding ukuleles to our curriculum.
Please help me show my students that there is more to making beautiful music and their creativity can stretch far beyond what they ever dreamed.
