Help me give my students an opportunity to add string instruments to our music program. Ukuleles are versatile instruments that both my younger and older students can learn to play.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the honor of working at an extremely diverse school with almost 1000 students. We are a Title I campus, with almost 60% low socioeconomic students, that consistently scores above average on all our standardized testing and was recently named a "No Place For Hate" campus. We were also recently honored as a 2016 State of Texas Honor Roll recipient which recognizes public elementary, middle, and high schools that demonstrate consistently high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement over time and reduction in achievement gaps.
Our school motto is: "Y is a safe place for all students to learn, grow and become their best self." Our music program accomplishes this through our fun and dynamic choir and musicals performances along with our effort to incorporate cross-curricular activities.
My students love to incorporate instruments into their singing and learning.
My Project
I am requesting a set of ukuleles to help my students not only improve their musicianship skills but allow them to be creative and discover cooperative learning through working with partners. My goal is to use these activities to help bolster self-esteem through teamwork and also allow my students to create their own music and accompany songs within their repertoire.
Playing a musical instrument engages practically every area of the brain at once, especially the visual, auditory and motor sections of the brain.
And as with any other workout, disciplined structured practice in playing music strengthens those brain functions, allowing us to apply that strength to other activities.
As reported by TIME, a study from Northwestern University revealed that in order to fully obtain the cognitive benefits of a music class, kids can’t just sit there and listen to music; they have to be actively engaged in the music and participate in the class. Very few things can accomplish this goal more than learning how to play a musical instrument.
I know that my students are going to be very excited about the opportunity to learn how to play the ukulele. It's a win/win situation: my students get to have fun and they get to improve their cognitive skills! By funding this project, you can help my students have these experiences not only today but in the years to come.
