The fifth graders at my school are a wonderful, clever, diverse mix of kids from a wide variety of economic and cultural backgrounds in Durham, NC.
These students may not have much money, but they have a ton of heart and a deep passion for music.
They love playing instruments in my class, and many hope to go on to join band and orchestra in middle and high school. Very few of my students have ever had the opportunity to have private music lessons.
My Project
My students are amazing, creative, and wonderful kids, who often don't have the same access to musical opportunities as more privileged students. Most kids at my school can't afford an instrument, let alone private lessons, so it's up to me to help them have a wide range of musical experiences.
I want my students to learn how to play a string instrument, regardless of their ability to pay for private lessons, and you can help me make this dream come true.
With the requested ukuleles and song books, each student in 5th grade will have the opportunity to learn how to play basic chords, take care of and appreciate a string instrument, and be engaged in the music curriculum in a new and exciting way.
