This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Little hands and bright minds long to make music just like the artists they hear on the radio. They eagerly anticipate coming to music class and making music!
For most of the students, this is their first musical experience in life.
They are eager to learn and thrilled that they get to put their hands on REAL instruments. We are a Title 1, bilingual elementary school in Texas. My students are hungry for music and enjoy making music with their voices and using the instruments we have on hand.
My Project
The ukuleles will supplement the other instruments in the classroom. Having small-bodied strummed string instruments on hand offers a completely different instrumental perspective for performing than percussion and our melody instruments. They will give more students opportunities to express themselves musically in a way most suitable for them individually.
The ukulele is a wonderful way for students to be successful in music by following the chord progressions in music.
Some students who struggle with melodic instruments, do wonderfully on a chorded instrument. So giving them more opportunities for success helps ensure that music will remain an important part of their lives through adulthood. Music plays such an integral part of enriching the human spirit.
