Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As the music specialist in my school, I teach 340 students spanning pre-k through fifth grade. Many of my students are English language learners and over three quarters of the student population falls into the low-income category.
My students are creative and have so much to offer; they should be provided with the tools to express themselves.
The music program at this school is fairly new, and any addition of instruments would greatly enhance the program. These students deserve some new supplies to create with!
My Project
The ukulele is a wonderfully approachable instrument for students of all ages! Instruments that are easier to pick up help students feel more successful in the classroom, and when they feel more successful they are more likely to try new things and explore their creativity! Having these instruments in my classroom would provide my students with so many more opportunities to have a creative outlet. Students can accompany themselves on ukulele while they sing, practice chord progressions, and learn just about any song- from classic traditional folk songs to songs that are on the radio! These would help my students connect music in the classroom to music in their every day lives!
