My Students
Have you ever tried to do something that frustrated you so badly that you just wanted to give up? Imagine experiencing that frustration daily. My students struggle with reading and finding reading materials that they can connect with.
I work with special needs students in a high poverty urban school.
Their special learning needs impact their self confidence which in turn affects their motivation. Many do not realize their true potential. They avoid classwork and homework because they perceive it as too difficult. My students are very aware that they are not on the same academic level as their 5th grade peers. The parents of my students try to help their children as much as they can, however they face many challenges. Some did not complete high school, others are single parents working multiple jobs and are working when their children get home from school, and others simply don't know how to help. The current curriculum assumes a wealth of background knowledge and experiences that my children haven't been exposed to.
My Project
Can you please help my students desire to read more by giving them access to books and magazines that they are interested in and can connect with? They are very discouraged because reading is a challenge for them every day. My hope is that obtaining these books and magazines will inspire my students to want to read more often which will in turn improve their poor reading skills.
Please consider providing my students with a library of books and magazines that will excite them.
These books will lay the foundation for their growth as readers. When students have reading material that they are interested in, their motivation will increase. Thank you in advance for considering donating to my cause.
