I teach a dynamite and diverse group of 7th and 8th-grade readers and writers. My students enjoy choosing books from our classroom library in order to read daily. My students know that the only way to become a better reader is to read! The same goes for writing...the more you read the better you write! My students read and fill out a book log daily. They enjoy reading in our classroom library area as well as in a variety of chairs and bean bags located around the classroom. Seeing my students getting engaged in reading and discussing text they are reading is especially rewarding.
My students are in need of books for the classroom library in order to meet the needs of different reading levels, gender-specific books, and books for all ethnic groups.
Books are becoming available daily in these areas that are needed in our classroom library. When students have books that they can directly relate to such as ethnicity, gender or specific personal interests, they are more engaged in their reading.
My Project
The books on the wish list are engaging and entertaining for my middle school struggling readers. My students enjoy these books and need more in our classroom library so that all students have high-interest level books to read. Graphic novels are very popular among my students and needed for our classroom library. My students are required to read and complete a book log daily. This increases reading and writing skills, as well as comprehension, vocabulary and higher level thinking. Students enjoy having discussions about books they have read and need more highly engaging books like the ones selected for this classroom library project.
