This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Imagine crying and having a meltdown every time you have to read a book. Well this is what my struggling readers go through each time they pick books from the classroom library. I could’t believe how low my students are reading this year.
I teach a 12:1:1 Special education class in the North Bronx.
My students are all classified Emotionally and disabled and Intellectually challenged. I teach a bridged class of 4th and 5th graders. Most of my students are coming from a single income family and lack the support they need to be strong readers. All of the students in my class qualify for free school lunch.
My Project
Unfortunately I was not prepared this year to provide the leveled books my students need. My library is lacking lower leveled books. I am writing this proposal as a desperate cry for help. My students need more Kindergarten and first grade leveled books. They are not able to practice reading on their level. Studies show that the more a child reads on his or her reading level the greater progress there would be. Often times I watch them struggle to read the words on the pages of the books in the classroom library. My students are all labeled emotionally disturbed hence, they often have meltdowns during independent reading time. They have a difficult time handling the frustration that is attached to reading these challenging books.
I am asking for your support.
I would like to have a leveled library that is conducive to struggling readers. I want to arm my students with the power and motivation to read with success. I want to prepare my fourth and fifth graders to be successful readers throughout their school careers.
