Do you remember the thrill of getting to use the cassette player and headphones in elementary school to listen to books on tape? My students love listening to stories - whether by an adult, a peer, or through electronics - and the Nook provides them just this opportunity!
My students are second graders who struggle with reading.
They often come to school with little or no exposure to books at home. Our school has guest readers come into the classroom, I read to them several times throughout the day, other teachers come and take struggling students to read - and all because the more students are exposed to books and reading, the more important reading becomes and the better readers the students become. They LOVE to have stories read to them and this gives them one more way to experience this.
My Project
I am requesting a pair of Nook Color E-readers and cases to use in my second grade classroom. These e-readers will be used as part of the Daily 5 reading program in my classroom - of which "Listen to Reading" is a daily component. My struggling students will have the opportunity to choose a book at their individual reading level and have the e-reader read the story to them.
I would like to show my students that their hard work in reading will bring great results.
Through your generosity, you can help show my second graders that their teachers are not the only people that feel reading is important and worthwhile, and that there are people that believe in their education.
I cannot wait for the day that these Nooks arrive and I can share your generosity and support with these eager students - you are supporting a future generation of readers!
