Struggling Readers Can Love Books Too!

My students need Kindles in order to help bolster their reading by being able to listen to an audiobook while reading.

My Students

In our class, we read independently every day. Many of my students are reading 1-3 grades below reading level. This means that reading independently can be a struggle for them, and it becomes a cause of frustration and lack of engagement. I do my best to supplement my classroom library with books that students want to read, but its just not enough.

They are a lively group of students who are not afraid to speak their mind.

Since many students do not have adults at home who speak English, they are responsible for their learning and may require extra support in the classroom. Several of my students also are identified as having a reading disability, and require text to be read aloud to them. They are engaged and technology literate. I have several students who have found great success and engagement when given the chance to listen to a book as well as read it. I've seen students go from daydreaming during reading time to groaning when the timer goes off for reading because they are actually into the book when they have the audiobook. Having a set of kindle e-readers would benefit both my reluctant and struggling readers.

My Project

In my classroom, Kindle fire tablets would bolster students reading lives. Independent reading is a daily part of the curriculum. Students are able to choose the book they want to read in their reading level and the goal is to give students choice in their reading life with the hope that they will enjoy it and the learning will be more authentic.

Many students who struggle with reading or are identified as having a learning disability do not enjoy independent reading.

Having a Kindle to read the story to them while they read will help engage students in their reading and improve their reading skills.
