Our young fives, kindergarten and first grade students are enthusiastic about learning and thrive in an environment where they have choice and opportunities for creativity! They are engaged in project-based learning at school in addition to a school-wide STEAM program.
The Young Fives, Kindergarten and First Grade students share a common playground.
Because of the geography of the land, in addition to limited financial resources, there are only a few structures available for students to play on. Teachers creatively find other ways for students to enjoy being outdoors.
One option on the playground is to have students be more engaged in nature-based activities. Logs, wood slices, tree stumps, etc. provide creative ways for students to work their large muscles while still stimulating their imagination. The young children , for example, love lifting logs and making observations about the world around them! They are curious, imaginative and enthusiastic about their natural surroundings!
My Project
Young children love to feel like they are as strong as their caring adults! They love being outdoors and playing with adult toys! Providing snow shovels allows students to feel like a contributing citizen by clearing snow on the playground, as well as helping them build their upper body muscles. Students will take turns pushing snow away and using the piles of snow to make snowmen and snowballs. As the snow melts, the rakes will provide yet another interesting way for them to be engaged in working with nature while building their stamina and strength. Fall and spring would be great times to pull out those rakes and have fun with the piles that nature provides. A storage unit allows teachers to access the tools throughout the day and keep them in a safe location when not in use.
