I am an occupational therapist for Davis School District and I travel to 15 different schools. My students are Kindergarten through 12th grade. I service a diverse student population ranging from a general education to special education, and even students in functional skills classrooms. My students have varying abilities, but the most common deficits my students display are fine motor and visual motor delays, which significantly impacts their ability to participate in the general and special education curriculum. Thank you!
My Project
My project involves bringing occupational therapy treatment activities that targets the development of fine motor skills. Rather than pulling out students for one-on-one services, by bringing the activities into the classroom, I will be providing Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), which is ideal for students and even teachers. The fine motor activities are targeted to incorporate goal areas for one or many students in the classroom. Many times, therapists are trying to meet the needs of one student in a push-in model of school-based therapy while encouraging development of fine motor skills of the whole classroom. A therapist that is pushing into the classroom can address specific needs while encouraging development that other kids need to progress on as well.So often teachers asked therapist for ideas that work on school learning objectives while incorporating fine motor skills or visual perception skills that are needed for handwriting and reading. I envision four table rotations, each table containing a fine motor activity (that will also address IEP goals) involves working on cutting skills, writing instruction on the pre-writing shapes, hand strengthening and dexterity activities. Students will love the rotation system because they can try out a variety of different hands on activities with the new and fresh activities that they may not have experienced before. This can help them to grasp learning and play while working on underlying skill areas.
