I am a teacher in a district where a majority of the students live in poverty and are significantly at risk for academic failure. All the students in my school qualify for free breakfast and lunch because of their low household income levels. I try to provide opportunities to my students that are equal to those students in more affluent districts receive.
Because of the challenges my students face, it is even more important they have access to a high-quality education.
My Project
Frog and Toad. Junie B. Jones. Ramona Quimby. Strong characters hook readers. When students fall in love with a character they develop an appetite for reading and they devour all the other titles in that series. When they finish that series, they move onto another, and another, and another. Over time, they develop a reading identity; they learn which types of books they like to read, and they read more and more of them. By then it it is too late: they are hooked on reading!
A strong character is a struggling reader's best friend.
Characters like Captain Underpants or Fly Guy can engage an unmotivated reader when nothing else works. Books with interesting characters will get my students excited about reading so they will practice reading strategies independently and share with partners in reading workshop daily. They will make a difference in the lives of my under-resourced students.
