Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work as a Speech-language pathologist in a high needs, low-income public school. Over 75% of students are from low-income homes. My school has the highest homeless population in the city at the elementary level and 100% of my students qualify for free lunch. In addition, over 70% of my students are considered English language learners.

My students, in particular, are special education students with speech and/or language disorders.

However, I often work inclusively with all students in various classrooms (grades pre-K-6). I have been popping in and out of their classrooms since preschool or kindergarten as I collaborate, support, and co-teach with other teachers in the building to build literacy and language skills.

Despite the everyday challenges these students face, my students come to school every day, eager to learn and show off their skills. Whether it be a preschooler who finally is able to ask for help, a kindergartener who can proudly answer a question about a story, or a second grader who is able to remember and retell a story for the first time, I love to see my students’ faces light up with pride for their accomplishments!

My Project

As a public school SLP in a high-needs district I often need to get very crafty with my speech and language materials. To provide my students with high quality and engaging therapy, I often create my own speech therapy materials. I do this by scouring library book sales, perusing thrift stores for used games I can repurpose, and frequent trips to the dollar store or target throughout the school year for essential office supplies. These essential materials will make it a lot easier for me to save, organize, and protect my created materials. The laminating sheets and cardstock will help me to protect printed speech sound cards, language games, social stories, and story visuals, etc by making them strong and durable. The binders, binder clips, binder rings, poly zip envelopes, and sheet protector pages will help me to store and organize the materials to make them safe and easily accessible. The Velcro helps me to create materials that are engaging and hands-on. Students can interact with the materials by adding and removing Velcro-applied visuals to a story or communication book. This is very effective at helping early communicators communicate their wants and needs.

With the use of these materials I can individualize and customize my speech and language treatment and make sure each student is getting what he or she needs to succeed in school.
