All students are special no matter their race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or their backgrounds. The students in this class are a great group of boys and girls ranging from ages 6-7 and with very different backgrounds. Some of the students are vegan, some are Hispanic, some are in transition between homes, and some have never been inside a school until this year. Each student has their own rhythm that they like to learn and move to. Some of our students enjoy sitting and working hard, while others like to move around and receive more of an active type of learning.
With great diversity levels within this one classroom, each student should have the chance to meet and exceed their own personal goals as well as the goals of our school and community.
Each student is showing significant growth already and will continue to grow throughout the rest of the year. As our community is also very diverse in background, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status these goals can be very different for each individual child. Within the classroom, this diversity is honored through the notion of choice. Choice from what they want to learn or play to where/how they want to sit.
My Project
At our school it is a goal and expectation for students to SOAR as Gliders at our school.
Each week there is a school-wide competition to see which class is given the most SOAR tickets because their class is caught by other staff members, practicing and performing to one of these four standards. There is also a small competition between the students in each classroom to be the SOAR Student of the Week (selection made by classroom teachers). The teachers will recognize those students who are displaying behavior and actions of a SOAR student. This is something each child continues to strive to earn, it is a big honor from the school, their teacher, and their classmates to be recognized as a SOAR student. We would like to make this and even more rewarding and exciting honor for the students in our classroom by adding a SOAR table with two SOAR chairs, as the honorary place where the 2 SOAR students for the week will be able to sit during class time.
