What does music mean to you? How does it impact your life? "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything." - Plato.
I thought it would be a fun idea to give the 4th-6th grade students in my school the opportunity to be in a strings program.
I thought we might generate enough interest for a small ensemble, perhaps a dozen serious students. As of Day 1 of this program, I have 24 very serious, very committed violin, viola and cello students. This represents almost 7% of the entire student body. We are a small school, focused primarily on core skills. Our principal welcomed the idea of expanding the arts in our school and as the strings director, I am overwhelmed and gratified with the number of serious budding musicians.
My students are truly in need of music stands. We have a total of three in the school, including one purchased by my principal. I have two of my own personal music stands that I bring and two of my students have brought their own personal music stands. More than half of these stands are fold-up stands and do not hold much music. I can do some work with them learning music by rote, but one of my goals is to help them learn to read music as well as to play music beautifully.
Your donation of music stands will make a huge difference to my students.
We are working to create the experience of learning to play a musical instrument as well as to work together as an ensemble to perform in concerts and to share our musical ability. Music stands are not an extravagance, they are truly something we need for a successful strings program for a large group of our student body.
