My students come from all over the world; the school is over three quarters African American and Hispanic, and many are immigrants themselves or the children of immigrants. They are bright, caring, funny, imaginative, ambitious, amazing individuals who love school and want to do their best. I have aspiring doctors, lawyers, moms, teachers, presidents, circus clowns, and business owners.
They have big dreams, but limited resources to achieve those goals.
Over half of our school is on the free and reduced meals program. Many live in apartments, some with single parents. Many things I used to take for granted are unattainable luxuries for my students. Just because they don't have a lot of money doesn't mean they shouldn't have the same opportunities as everyone else though!
My Project
Our school was fortunate to find inexpensive violins, exactly enough to allow each child who chose it the opportunity to play. However, many of those violins have old strings in desperate need of replacement. These old strings require students to put a lot of extra pressure on the strings to get a good sound, are difficult to tune, and, in some cases, are fraying & in danger of snapping at any moment.
Having new strings will allow students to play their instruments more easily, tune to the rest of the group, and help them sound their very best.
These seven sets of strings are enough to fix all of our new-to-us instruments.
