Student musicians at our school are recognized as high achievers and are committed to their academic learning. Through their creativity, curiosity, and musical exploration, they are respected as leaders and role models by their peers and teachers alike.
Our young musicians teach me every day about patience, compassion, and empathy as they develop their own identities and shape their own futures.
My challenge is to always find the most compelling ways to guide, nurture, and support my students in all of their endeavors, incorporating music as a powerful connector between their lives and the ever-changing world.
My Project
It is no wonder that string instruments have been long popular with young musicians; evidence of the oldest instruments date back to 4,500 years ago. From symphony orchestras to string quartets, from world music to electronic music, string instruments have played a vital role in the history of human civilization to convey emotion and spirituality. Today's young musician will find that string instruments are challenging yet fun to learn, both as an individual as well as an ensemble musician.
Building confidence in young string musicians is critical in the earliest stages of the learning process; the initial sounds of a beginner are rarely pleasing to the ear which may be discouraging.
And yet, if a novice player is introduced to good habits and provided with an instrument with high quality strings and proper supplies from the start, he/she can establish a strong foundation from which to develop and grow consistent practice habits. I would like to provide my string players (within our 3 orchestras) with the following supplies:
*Strings - the D'addario brand has been highly regarded for its consistency of tone quality
*Shoulder rests - a necessity to support the violin and viola in allowing the left hand to freely "roam" the fingerboard
*Rosin - used to create friction on the hair of the bow so that it can "grip" the strings with each stroke, causing the string to vibrate and "speak"
