Strings and Orff for Our Music Classroom!

Help me give my students two alto xylophones and one guitar starter kit for my music classroom.

My Students

I teach at a Head Start through fifth-grade elementary school. Many of my students have never had the opportunity to play an instrument, much less learn how to write or compose music. I was able to have several music projects funded throughout the years that allowed me to extend my program in terms of strings, percussion, and recorders. Although most of my students are of Haitian-American heritage, we pride ourselves on being diverse as our teaching staff comes from many countries and ethnic backgrounds.

In March of 2020, our students' lives were turned around abruptly because of the COVID-19 virus, and they were forced to learn at home using online resources whether or not they had online access.

Even though I serve a community that is high poverty, my students have found comfort and stability through music and the performing arts. They work hard and are eager to learn. They bring joy wherever and whenever they perform in the community and for the school population.

My Project

This school year, our music students have been fortunate to be able to learn music on recorders of their own and class-set ukeleles. There are a few students who have expressed great interest in the guitar and I have run out of guitars to give these students as the interest has grown daily. We also have zoom auditions for our yearly Superintendent's concert for the Orff ensemble, but we do not have sufficient alto xylophones.

Because of the pandemic, we are encouraged to not have students share instruments, which means that each student would have to be assigned an alto xylophone to practice and audition with for upcoming rehearsals and performances.

I am requesting one student guitar starter kit and two alto xylophones so that students can learn these instruments without having to share, per pandemic guidelines. Your donations would allow the students who are successful in the auditions, to rehearse with the ensemble on their own assigned xylophone. Your donations will also allow another student to own a guitar of their own.
