My students walk into class every day full of wonder, energy, and resilience. Each day in the classroom is a chance to shine and start fresh, no matter what outside distractions may await them at home or in their community. I want them to know I believe in them and they can do anything. Because many do not get the opportunity to experiment with musical instruments outside of school, I LOVE to give them that experience when they come to music class. We love recorders, drums, ukuleles, and guitars, but sadly do not have enough to accommodate all students when they come to class.
I teach at a Title I School in Massachusetts, where 61% percent of our students are considered economically disadvantaged.
Our students from a variety of backgrounds. We have students that have just arrived to the United States, special education students, students with visual and auditory deficits, and students who have experienced major trauma. My students are so much more than these descriptions, however. These amazing kids just want a chance, and a glimpse into a future where they are allowed to see dreams come true!
Our school is located in a community where many students cannot afford musical instruments on their own.
For many students, the only time they will interact with a musical instrument is during their general music class periods.
The sense of pride and personal accomplishment in learning to play a musical instrument is one that cannot be found in many other learning mediums. My students often come in the door begging to play the hand drums, xylophones, and recorders. Please help us increase our inventory of musical instruments with guitars so my students can continue to explore and interact with music in new and more meaningful ways.
