This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students range in age from 4th grade up to 8th grade (about 9 to 13 years old) and either have me as a band director or an orchestra director. Most of them join my program with little to no experience on a musical instrument and spend these years developing fundamental skills of music.
These hardworking young musicians come from families with low economic means, making it difficult to acquire the materials needed for such classes.
However, despite this, my band and orchestra members are eager to learn new skills and are always very excited to play a musical instrument. I am always working on ways to provide the most enriching experience I can in the hopes of opening new doors for my students' futures.
My Project
This past year I created a brand new orchestra program at my school, and we have almost no instruments in our inventory. I was pleasently surprised by how many students were eager to join this new program, and unfortunately with a small inventory it was hard to meet that demand. We found ways to help a few students get instruments, but we have an ambitious goal of growing into a full sized program! To do that, we need to expand the amount of instruments we are able to provide students.
These violas is just the first step in my goal of growing the size and strength of my band program.
Thank you for your generous help and support of my students as we work together to build this orchestra program!
