This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As my 5th grade students begin the second half of their school day, I often hear grumbling tummies. For many of my students the warm breakfast at 7 a.m. and lunch at 11 a.m. are not enough to sustain their hunger for the entire school day. Please keep in mind their bodies are at a high growth rate at this age and burn off a lot of calories as they make their way through the school day. Also, I work in a Title I school district where all of the students qualify for the free breakfast and lunch program. Some of my students have shared with me that those two meals are the only meals that are prepared for them daily and often they go home to empty cabinets and refrigerators.

Often when I do my own personal grocery shopping, I snip coupons and stack deals to try and purchase additional items to have in my classroom snack closet for students who ask for them or for those who I notice could use an afternoon nutritional boost.

In an ideal scenario I would have a snack for every student every day to make it through our long school days or take home to help them through to the next day. Although I try my best it just is not possible for me to supplement snacks daily, so I am asking for your help with this DonorsChoose project to strike out hunger pangs for my students so they can concentrate on their academics and not their grumbling tummies.

Please help me stock my snack closet so I can continue to strike out hunger pangs and fuel the minds of my amazing students to help them reach their own personal academic success.
