Most days when you walk down the hall, you will see a fifth-grader volunteering to help another teacher or walking a younger student to class. They are driven to make good choices from day to day. Our school promotes a feeling of pride, and the students take their role as a "bulldog" very seriously!
Our classroom promotes a love of reading, by providing student access to all different genres and levels of books.
Thanks to DonorsChoose.org, we have been able to build our classroom library. The students enjoy finding a cozy spot to read these fiction books, and they are always excited to share their personal favorites with their classmates. Our classroom is a buzz about books!
My Project
I purchased a few logic board games at garage sales to use in the classroom. These weren't your typical indoor recess games, though we need those too with our long NY winters! These games helped students problem solve, stretch their thinking, and use logic to win. Students have LOVED those garage sale board games. Our biggest problem is that they often have to take turns with the favorite games. We would love to add to our collection of logic games to use during downtimes in the classroom. We're also replacing some well-loved games. The fifth-graders helped come up with a list of games that are known to help develop strategy and deeper thinking.
