This past school year my brilliant 3rd grade students had the challenge of a classroom redesign. Each group of 4 students worked together on a specific part of the classroom of their choice. Many groups experience “failing forward” and went back to the drawing board a few times. They went through the entire design process including building a prototype out of materials of their choice, and in the end presented their protocol types to our principal and learning coach. They came up with many outstanding ideas, some of which I put into effect immediately. One of the groups decided to focus on flexible seating. They found research supporting that flexible seating enhances and improves students learning and ability to focus. They built multiple prototypes of various seating and desks. We would be forever grateful to anyone who is willing to donate money to this new revolution in our classroom and learning.
My Project
All students of all ages want to feel comfortable, have a choice, be able to collaborate easily and to be able to communicate well with others. I want to give my students the opportunity for flexible seating to enhance their focus and improve their ability to learn in my classroom. This will make my classroom even more student centered. It will give them much more choice and self-awareness. Flexible seating provides students choice, a place for collaborations, a sense of community, and a higher commitment to learning. These new wobble chairs, short stools, wobble cushions, floor chairs, and floor desks will replace half of the regular desks/chairs in our classroom. This will provide comfortable spots for our Daily 5 Literacy block!
