My classroom is the LC counseling center, it's the black top and the lunch room, it's every classroom at LC, and sometimes it's even a student's home. A counselor works beyond the typical classroom walls. Middle school students are navigating an exciting, new and fragile time in their lives. They are trying to make sense of their world, making them curious and thoughtful. They are learning about who they are. Their unique personalities and academic abilities are developing and their need for independence is growing.
My Project
My students sometimes need a brain break. They also need tools and strategies for managing stress in an increasingly complex and fast paced world. Students are often scheduled into the early evening including multiple sports, extracurricular activities, and several hours of homework. Our students are very conscientious, responsible and occasionally take on more than they should at a young age. Research shows that frequent breaks: increase productivity and focus; boost brain power; and contribute to overall good health.
Currently every Tuesday during our advisory period, students can sign up to spend 27 minutes practicing mindfulness and meditation in order to manage stress and pressure.
Students will enter a calm classroom lit with battery operated candles, take a yoga mat, and be asked to find a comfortable position. With the use of guided meditation played through a large bluetooth speaker, they will have the opportunity for self care during what is generally a very hectic day in middle school. This 27 minutes will allow them to return to class refreshed and re-focused and ready to learn.
