My students come from various backgrounds and cultures. Some of them live with their grandparents, aunts, or are adopted by foster parents. Due to this diversity, I must make sure I have a variety of books to pique their interests. My students love to read. They are always going through our classroom library finding another book that catches their interest. Our school is also special because we are a Leader In Me school. This means we teach our students the 7-Habits of Highly Successful People written by Steven Covey. Our students are leaders and they live it everyday. They are very helpful with each other and our community. Our school is also a large food pantry that feeds nearly 40 families a week. Our school opens up on Thursdays for people in the community to come and pick up bags of food. It does not matter if they have students in our school or not; all are welcome.
My Project
I desperately need more sensory materials in my classroom in order to help my students self-regulate when they are stressed. The large rubber bands are great to put around the feet of chairs so students can kick their legs back and forth with some resistance. This helps with focus and attention. The massage ball combo and Hand Renewal kit will be great sensory items for my students to use when they need a break.
I have a Peace Corner area for students to take a break when needed.
I teach my students to be aware of their emotions and to calm down when they need to. We are a trauma informed school and work diligently to teach our students how to self-regulate. The Peace Break location in my room is one way that I do that.
