Strengthening Our Critical Thinking Skills in the Escape Room

My students need 4 Breakout EDU kits with access to the Breakout EDU platform for conducting collaborative problem solving and team investigations.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

My Students

Our students come from various different neighborhoods within our school district. They speak more than twenty-seven languages including English, Spanish, Bulgarian, Russian, Japanese, Tagalog, and Arabic. Twenty percent of our students qualify for a free or reduced cost breakfast/lunch.

Our students are so diverse; with many students excelling in academics, athletics, and artistic endeavors as well as struggling with various disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.

Our primary social focus is community building and character education.

Regardless of where our students come from, they deserve to be successful. Our school is their home and our tight knit community works closely together to see that all students have the chance, and the materials to learn and grow. Our students are amazing! They dream and think and question, always wondering about the world around them. They are the scientists, inventors, authors, artists, mathematicians and visionaries of tomorrow. By fostering an environment of collaboration, community, healthy competition, and risk taking, we are building a future that will make us proud.

My Project

My students are inquisitive and creative problem solvers. When they are presented with a problem that is truly worth solving, there is no limit to their outside the box thinking. As their teacher, it is my job to give them problems worth solving and to challenge them to look beyond the information provided, to see what is unsaid and read between the lines.

Students, today, are often given too much busy work- It is time we give them tasks that engage their critical thinking skills, their communication strategies, and their executive functioning skills while simultaneously producing very little paper.

The great thing about the escape room model is that the problem is not solved until you are able to leave the room. This sets up clear parameters.

My goal is to utilize the Breakout EDU platform to lead my students through collaborative investigations utilizing the Breakout boxes. The boxes get locked with several locks. Each of the 4 collaborative groups must find clues to opening the locks. The clues are hidden inside several problems that must be solved. On the Breakout platform, there are several already made lesson plans with puzzles for the students to solve to open the locks.

My dream is to use this platform and these boxes to prep for tests, to review at the end of a teaching unit, and to strengthen students' critical thinking skills and collaborative strategies. Thank you for considering funding this amazing resource.
