Our school is one of many Title I schools in Anchorage, Alaska. Unlike most of the other Title I schools in the area, our boundaries are spread much wider. Instead of being a population who mostly walk to school, we have 6 different bus routes.
At the beginning of the day, students come from miles around to join each other at our school.
This is the only time they see many of their classmates. Yet, watching the children interact, one would assume that relationships have developed outside of the classroom, which isn't the case for many of these children.
For many students, my classroom is the only safe sanctuary that they can depend on. Students know the daily routines and structure of the classroom will remain consistent. The know that they will be treated with respect, even on their worst days. Our third grade team works tirelessly to meet the needs of every single one of our children. Our students are making great progress. Together we have created an amazing community.
My Project
Many of the students who are constantly fidgeting, are also students who have weak core strength. They are uncomfortable in their chairs, and have developed poor postures. With wobble stools, students will be able to focus better on their work, as well as develop their core muscles. Healthier students will equal healthier learners.
In order for students to be successful, we must meet their individual needs.
Allowing students to wiggle while they listen and work will ensure that more students are achieving success in school. With the wobble stools and the bouncy bands, our classroom will have better options for individual learning needs.
