Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a school in the heart of Tempe, AZ. My students come from various ethnic backgrounds. Our school has more than 80% free or reduced rate lunch recipients. Many students in my class receive backpacks of food for the weekend. Despite the financial and economic hardships my students endure on a daily basis, they come to school ready to learn and knowing that they can be successful if they make the choice to work hard.
For the entire 10 years of my teaching career I have stayed at the same school because of the impact that these students have made on my life over the years... they are my passion.
Teaching them and watching them grow from Kindergarten through 5th grade has been a joy. I have had the opportunity to teach many students multiple years and many families over time.
This year, my class is made up of 24 unique and motivated learners who have tirelessly persisted not only in learning 3rd grade content knowledge, but also in engaging in authentic relationships with one another thereby creating a successful and supportive learning environment.
My Project
With a few iPads in the classroom, my students will be able to use technology to express their learning in a variety of ways. We currently use laptops to create Thinking Maps and show understanding of both literacy and math concepts. Additionally, we have started using SeeSaw as an online portfolio to monitor and assess student learning. While the laptops provide an engaging outlet for learning, there are not enough and students end up working in larger groups, which proves more difficult to maintain engagement.
With iPads in the classroom, students will be able to work in partners and engage in learning more efficiently.
The iPads also provide a more mobile and easier means of using technology. Students will be able to use iPads during small group learning, where they can access various apps and websites to engage in reading comprehension, creating thinking maps, making videos to explain learning, and creating presentations.
