Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 20 wonderful and lively first graders in a poor area of Brooklyn, New York. It is an honor for me to teach these children because scientific research has proven that the brain has the capacity to absorb the highest amount of information between the ages of 6 and 8. Obviously teaching my students how to read is my utmost responsibility and the greatest skill I can teach a child. However, my job is harder than some other teachers' because I am not given the materials needed to teach reading appropriately. New York City has a "balanced literacy" approach as the curriculum for reading. I believe that this is one of the best curriculums around but I don't have the necessary BIG BOOKS to teach Shared Reading which is a part of this reading curriculum. Shared reading is a time when all students are seated on the carpet looking at one large text so that they can learn new reading strategies as I model them aloud. I desperately need your help to purchase some big books that will allow me to continue modeling reading strategies to my students. These big books focus on authors such as Eric Carle, Marcus Pfister, and some books focus on character education. The predictable patterns and exciting story plots are key to my student's interest in reading. Not only will my students' reading improve, but their love for reading will grow as well. I believe that helping my students break through to literacy by purchasing these big books is one of the best proposals you can choose because you are helping these children become the leaders of tomorrow by giving them the gift of reading! Finally, think of all of the future children you will impact as I can use the big books year after year as a teacher in New York City.
