Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember reading those choose your own adventure books as a child? I certainly do! I want to expose my students to two different adventure stories that will capture their imagination as well as help them make connections between the character's lives and their own.
My students attend a Title I school and live in an urban area.
As a result, they have very limited experiences being in the wilderness. Our 6th grade team recognizes that all children should experience nature so we spend 3 days camping in the forest. During this trip our students have a chance to blossom into curious, motivated, and self-aware preteens. They have a chance to explore the wilderness while working together in an unconventional classroom, the forest. Over the years we have seen fantastic relationships built during this annual trip.
My Project
I am requesting copies of "My Side of the Mountain" and "Hatchet" because both books are focused on young boys who find themselves in the wilderness.
Prior to our trip to the forest, my students will read one of these novels and journal about what they have read. We focus on relating the main character's struggles and triumphs to the student's own life. We build a strong connection between literature and "real life". This is our introduction to analyzing literature.
In addition to journaling, our class will complete several projects based upon the book they choose to read. Some of the projects include, building fishing poles, building a fire from flint stones, drawing maps of their campsite, and spending time observing animals in the forest.
These books will set the tone of discovery for our school year.
I will also use the books from this donation year after year to inspire students to explore the outdoors and learn from Sam and Brian's adventures.
