Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at the school are passionate about things they care about. As a math teacher that does not always mean that they care about math as it is difficult for the majority of them. However, seeing the smiles on their faces when they begin to learn things and build up their confidence is a great sight to see.
I have sixth graders who are sweet, caring and empathetic towards each other and also eighth graders who are looking for their place in the world, can be rebellious but also are looking for someone to look up to and a purpose in life.
My Project
Early in the year, I had an influx of pencils so there was no excuse for any student to not engage with the material!
This late in the year I am Straight Out Of Pencils, students are now, unfortunately, being able to not engage with the work if I cannot find a pencil, pen, marker for them to use.
Having pencils again will enable my students to never have any excuse as to why they cannot try the math. This goes a long way with students who are not always motivated on their own to do well in the class let alone bring a pencil. It also creates a safe environment where they know that they will not be made fun of for not having a pencil again.
