Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
F.E.S.is a Title I School in Virginia that has some of the most diverse, unique, and hard-working group of ESOL students. These ESOL students come from a wide variety of economic, cultural, and academic backgrounds. I have the great pleasure of being able to work with several students of different English language proficiency levels and also work with students who are brand new to the country. These students and their stories of coming to America are incredible. As their teacher, I am hopeful to provide them with the best education and services they can receive - because they deserve it! They are eager to learn every day, and I reciprocate their drive-by fueling their minds!
My Project
This new school year, I am requesting a subscription to Scholastic Magazines Storyworks Jr.! Storyworks is a 32 page magazine full of multigenre, crosscuricular stories. I am so excited about all the differentiated opportunities that Storyworks will provide my English language learners.
In 2nd Grade, we dig deep into non-fiction and fiction stories, text features, poetry, and paired texts.
Storyworks will give my students exposure to all of these! The best part of Storyworks is that it provides me with lesson plans, close-reading and critical-thinking questions for every story, and ideas for scaffolded lessons and project-based activities. It also provides support for my English language learners through various authentic activities.
It is my hope that through the non-fiction stories that Storyworks provides, students will also be able to make connections to real-world stories and issues. Storyworks will help boost their confidence and understanding in reading!
