Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Middle School reading is all about getting students interested. Reading material must be of high interest in order to engage the middle school reader!
I teach 30 6th grade students who need to be motivated by great pieces of text.
They are active, real and ready to absorb any piece of text that I am able to put in front of them. We have a fairly decent teacher-funded library of books for their use. However, we are a public school, where funding is very tight right now, so money for extras just isn't available.
My Project
I am requesting 30 copies of Storyworks magazine. My students will each receive a copy every month. We will be able to read a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts, perform reader's theater pieces and enjoy current grammar mini-lessons. My favorite part of the magazine are the debate articles. The debate always is of high interest and provides the ground work for very interesting classroom discussion. This will put a magazine into each of my students' hands that will be exciting to read and enjoy each month.
My project is vital to my students and their success because it will provide a variety of reading lessons each week.
It will provide a text to share with their parents and siblings. It will help expose my students to texts that aren't even available in the library.
