Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are unique individuals, who come to school daily, ready to learn and be part of our school community.
Our school is a Title I school who was affected by Hurricane Harvey with approximately 95% of the students on free or reduced lunch.
Many of these students come from immigrant families who are seeking a better life. The low income/high poverty that surrounds them does not deter their spirit to learn. My students are faced with various obstacles, some stem from their home life, while others stem from learning gaps, but I will do what I can to obtain what they need to continue learning. I strive daily to provide my students different learning experiences that are creative, engaging and meaningful.
My students face daily challenges outside and inside our classroom. Hurricane Harvey, along with our winter storm, greatly impacted our school community and district by disrupting many of their lives. Because of this, my intent is to keep education alive and going for them with positive learning opportunities. Our school is a safe place, where I can inspire them to have success!
My Project
My students need the subscriptions to Scholastic News Storyworks to bring expository articles into our classroom to enrich our learning. Becoming familiar with informational texts will allow my students to make connections to our world, along with learning the skills that are associated with non-fiction.
Utilizing this resource is definitely much more engaging and relevant than a printed passage or worksheet.
This type of text will allow students to share their background knowledge and access prior skills while learning new information that is applied to concepts that will be tested on campus, district , and state assessments. Students will be encouraged to read short passages about interesting topics that will help with their reading fluency, comprehension and skills while making connections to real world events.
