My students need more quality read aloud books, like How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin? and Bunny Money, to compliment our learning topics and to nurture our love for literature!
I teach at the only elementary school in a small farming town in Oregon. Many of the kids I teach are growing up on farms or with family businesses. They are up with the cows, ride the bus for miles, and spend their days learning and playing alongside their friends at school. The families served at my school come from a diverse educational backgrounds, and many are low income.
My class is a group of five-year-old, small-town kindergarteners making memories together!
And these kids are going places! Among them I can already see a marine biologist, a police officer, a couple self proclaimed princesses, a mathematician, and one true entrepreneur!
These kids are ready to engage in everything they can get their hands on. They love to create new and interesting things with donated materials, sing and dance as we learn, and experience new things together.
My Project
A good read aloud is appreciated no more than in kindergarten. In my class storytime is anticipated by all. During storytime we go on adventures, learn about our world, and make connections. Our stories move us to draw and spur on our writing.
Fun books read aloud together help us grow in our comprehension and communication skills.
They also deepen our understanding of the topics we are studying such as rules, insects, nursery rhymes, etc. One book can support learning across many topics. Brown Bear, Brown Bear will help us learn colors, about predictions, about rhythm. Too Much Glue will teach us an important classroom skill, and test our skills on recalling details. And each and every one of these books will make us love literature all the more!
